5 Simple Ways to Speed Up Your Slow Laptop

Before buying a new laptop, try these expert fixes โ€” they work!

Every day at our workshop in Jaunpur, we see customers walk in with laptops that feel unbearably slow. They're ready to throw them away โ€” but in most cases, a simple fix or upgrade brings them back to life completely. Before spending โ‚น30,000โ€“โ‚น50,000 on a new laptop, try these five proven solutions.

1. Upgrade to an SSD (Biggest Impact)

If your laptop still has an old HDD (hard disk drive), upgrading to an SSD is the single best thing you can do. An HDD reads data at 80โ€“120 MB/s, while a modern SATA SSD goes at 500โ€“550 MB/s. An NVMe SSD? Up to 3,500 MB/s. That's why a laptop that took 3โ€“4 minutes to start Windows can boot in under 15 seconds after an SSD upgrade.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip from Our Workshop

We stock Foxin 256GB SATA SSD, EVM 128GB and 256GB NVMe, and Consistent 256GB NVMe at vTechZone. Installation takes less than an hour and includes full data transfer from your old drive.

2. Add More RAM

Most laptops sold 3โ€“5 years ago came with just 4GB of RAM. Windows 10/11 alone uses 2โ€“3GB, leaving very little for Chrome, Office, or any other app. Upgrading from 4GB to 8GB RAM (or 8GB to 16GB) dramatically improves multitasking speed โ€” web browsing, office work, and video calls become noticeably smoother.

Check if your laptop has a free RAM slot or supports upgrades. Most laptops sold between 2015โ€“2021 support up to 8GB or 16GB. Our technicians can check compatibility and install RAM while you wait.

3. Disable Startup Programs

Many programs secretly add themselves to Windows startup, running in the background every time you turn on your laptop. Over time, 15โ€“20 background apps can consume all your RAM and slow everything down. Here's how to fix it:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click the Startup tab
  • Right-click and Disable any program you don't need at startup (Spotify, Teams, OneDrive, Discord, etc.)
  • Restart your laptop and notice the difference

This is free and takes only 5 minutes. Most people see a 30โ€“50% faster startup just from this step.

4. Clean Out Dust from the Cooling Fan

This one surprises many people, but a dusty cooling system can slow your laptop to a crawl. When the CPU and GPU overheat because of dust-blocked vents, the processor automatically "throttles" โ€” it slows itself down to reduce heat. A laptop that should run at 2.5 GHz might drop to 0.8 GHz when overheating.

We recommend professional internal dust cleaning every 1โ€“2 years, especially in Jaunpur's dry and dusty environment. Our team uses proper tools and replaces thermal paste during cleaning for maximum cooling performance.

5. Reinstall Windows (Fresh Start)

If your laptop is 3+ years old, the Windows installation has likely accumulated years of leftover files, broken registry entries, and software conflicts. A clean Windows reinstallation is like a factory reset โ€” it makes even a 6-year-old laptop feel fresh and fast again.

Make sure to back up all your important files before reinstalling. Our team can do a clean Windows installation for you while safely preserving your data on an external drive.

โšก Quick Checklist โ€” Try These in Order:

1) Disable startup programs (free, 5 mins) โ†’ 2) Clean dust (โ‚น300โ€“500) โ†’ 3) Upgrade RAM (โ‚น800โ€“2,000) โ†’ 4) Install SSD (โ‚น1,800+) โ†’ 5) Fresh Windows install (โ‚น500)
